The Angels Sign Robert Stephenson to a Multi-Year Deal

The Los Angeles Angels have made a significant move in bolstering their bullpen by signing right-handed pitcher Robert Stephenson to a 3-year deal worth $33 million, pending physical. The deal also includes an option for a potential fourth year, signaling the Angels commitment to solidifying their roster for many seasons to come.

Stephenson, will be 31 entering the 2024 season, had a career year after being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in early June of the 2023 season. The addition of Stephenson brings depth and experience to the Angels bullpen, addressing a key area that required attention during the offseason. Known for his reliable and versatile pitching, Stephenson's capabilities will undoubtedly provide the Angels with more options in high-leverage situations, it’s possible Stephenson takes over the closer role for the Halos in 2024.

Stephenson had a 2.35 ERA over 38.1 innings of work for the Rays. He struck out 60 while walking 8 in those innings for the Rays. From June 15th through the end of 2023, Stephenson had a 44.7 K%, 40.7 K-BB%, 0.65 WHIP, 1.82 xFIP, 31.SwStr% and a 49.6% chase percentage which all ranked 1st in MLB through that period. Stephenson added a cutter last season into his pitch mix and started using his splitter more as well. His cutter was one of the best in the big leagues after adding it to his repertoire when joining the Tampa Bay Rays.

Overall Stephenson is a great addition to the Angels roster as it vastly improves the Angels bullpen. It seems like the team is concentrating on bullpen additions in hopes of shortening games as they’ve also added Adam Cimber, Luis Garcia and Adam Kolarek. They are yet to add a formidable threat into the rotation as Zach Plesac is the only Angels possible rotation signing this offseason. As for Stephenson’s role, it’s safe to assume Carlos Estevez will be the closer in 2024, but don’t count out Stephenson who may take over the closer duties if he wow’s Ron Washington and staff in Spring. It’s far more likely Stephenson will be one of setup man for the Halos to get the ball to Estevez in the ninth.

Conclusion

The Angels' acquisition of Robert Stephenson represents a pivotal step in fortifying their bullpen. By securing his services with a multi-year deal, the team aims to enhance its competitive edge and elevate its performance on the field. The team is far from done this offseason as they have plenty of holes left to fill. Angels likely are still seeking a middle of the order bat, two starting pitchers and possibly one more reliever in the form of a left-hander. That left-hander may be Aroldis Chapman or even former Angel, Matt Moore. As the 2024 season approaches, Angel fans eagerly anticipate seeing more additions to contribute to the team's success.
