InsideHalos & Team Update

Firstly, I would like to apologize for the delay in activity on this site as it has been awhile since the last post on InsideHalos.com. I have moved from California to Washington in April and attended my sister’s college graduation early this month. It’s been a busy couple of months to say the least but we are going to get back to getting content out to you all on the InsideHalos community. We are actively seeking some writers to add to the team on the website. If you are interested in writing for the website, please click here.

To get back on topic, the Halos have had a struggling start to begin the 2024 campaign. After 53 games this season the team is 20-33 and has faced some early injuries to key players, Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon. Along with some injuries to Chase Silseth, Miguel Sanó and Brandon Drury. The Angels have come and gone with the Aaron Hicks experiment and now have a hot hitting, Kevin Pillar and Willie Calhoun in the middle of their lineup.

Halos vs Yankees

The Halos host the New York Yankees at Angel Stadium later today, as they’ll face the AL’s most winning team in a 3-Game Set beginning at 6:38pm PST. They’ll have quite the uphill battle, the Yankees have one of the hottest lineups in baseball led by Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. The pitching matchup, while it is their four, five and one starter, are still 3 formidable arms on the mound, Nestor Cortes, Luis Gil and Carlos Rodón. It would be incredible if the Angels can somehow squeeze out this series but the odds are against them as avoiding the sweep should be the goal this series. The Yankees are coming off a series victory against the San Diego Padres, and the Angels hope to give the Yankees their first series loss of the since they faced the Baltimore Orioles from April 30-May 2nd. Lets get into the series preview and give our predictions for this series.

Game 1

In game one, left-hander “Nasty” Nestor will take the ball for the Yankees as he currently holds a stat line that includes a 3.29ERA in 65.2 innings of work with 63 total strikeouts. The Angels will send Griffin Canning to take on Cortes, Canning has had a great 4 starts in May as he’s held 1.99ERA in 22.2 innings of work. Overall on the season Canning has a 5.05ERA with 36 strikeouts in 51.2 innings of work. The Angels will hope that Canning can stay on track and finish out May on a strong note. With the Angels facing a lefty, you can almost guarantee that Kevin Pillar will be in the lineup with Mickey Moniak riding the pine in this one. Pillar has been one of the Angels hottest hitters as of late, so you hope that provides a bit of a boost against Nestor Cortes.

Game 2

Game two you’ll see a much more interesting matchup as the Angels best pitcher will be on the mound, none other than lefty Tyler Anderson. Anderson has held a 2.52ERA in 64.1 innings of work this season while striking out 44 total batters. The left-hander has looked like a complete different pitcher than he was last season and he looks to continue that against right-hander Luis Gil. Gil has had quite the run as he currently has a 2.11ERA with 70 strikeouts across 55.1 innings of work. He is coming off a start against the Seattle Mariners in which he had 8 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. The start before that he had 14 strikeouts against the Chicago White Sox.

Game 3

The series finale against the Yankees you’ll have left-hander Patrick Sandoval taking the bump as he’ll face off against a fellow southpaw in Carlos Rodón. Sandoval overall has been much better as of late aside from a horrible hiccup against the Guardians last time out in which he gave up 8 runs in 3.2 innings of work in which he allowed 3 homeruns and 4 walks. The left-hander looks to bounce back in this one, Sandoval currently carries a 5.60ERA with 57 strikeouts in 54.2 innings of work. He has an ugly win loss record this season as he only has 2 wins this season paired with 7 total losses. Rodón on the other hand has had a bounce back season as he currently holds a 2.95ERA with 57 strikeouts across 61 innings this season. The Angels will need to get to Rodon while needing a quality start out of Sandoval.

Our Predictions

The Angels have quite the battle this series and while the Yankees are heavily favored, we think the Angels have a chance to take this series. It’s going to come down to the first two games of this series, if the Angels lose one of those games they are bound to take another series L. Right now you can’t count on Patrick Sandoval to get you a victory, but you can count on Tyler Anderson for another quality start and hope for another good start in the month of May from Griffin Canning. This series will ultimately come down to how well the Angels can hold back the Yankees offense, and for that reason we believe the Angels will end up losing the series against the Yankees, but avoid the sweep with a victory in Game 1 with Griffin Canning on the mound.
