Halos vs Mariners

The Halos take on the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park later today, as they’ll face the current AL West leaders in a 3-Game Set beginning at 7:10pm PST. This one should be a much more even matchup compared to the Yankees series. The pitching matchup, once again will be the Angels taking on the four, five and one starter in their rotation. The three pitchers they’ll face this series is Bryan Woo, Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo. Overall the Angels should have a real chance this series with José Soriano, Reid Detmers and Griffin Canning on the mound. The Mariners are coming off a series victory against the Houston Astros in which they won 3 of 4 games. The Angels on the other hand are coming off a tough series L against the Yankees. The Angels are looking to gain some ground in the AL West, which it is still a pretty doable stretch with 4 months of play left to go. Mickey Moniak likely will be in the lineup for the majority of this series as the Angels will strictly face right-handed starters. Pillar continues to be one of the Angels hottest hitters, so one would hope Manager Ron Washington is able to keep his bat in the lineup in some capacity. Lets get into the series preview and give our predictions for this series.

Game 1

In game one, the Halos will send José Soriano to the mound. He currently holds a 3.61ERA and 51 strikeouts in 51.2 innings this season. In the month of May, Soriano has had a 2.73ERA with 28 K’s in 29.2 innings. The Mariners will send right-hander Bryan Woo to face off against Soriano. Woo currently has a 1.66ERA with 16 strikeouts in 21.2 innings of work. He recently faced the Washington Nationals in which he went 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs with 1 strikeout. The Angels will be looking for a little bit of a bounce back out of Soriano to give them a nice start to this series.

Game 2

Game two you’ll see what could be a brutal matchup or a good one. Reid Detmers who has been vastly struggling the past month and a half will take the mound as he’ll face off against Bryce Miller. Detmers hasn’t been the same pitcher in the month of May surrendering 26 earned runs in 24.2 innings, which translates to a 9.34ERA, he did however strike out 30. The hope is he can leave May behind and get back to the pitcher he was in April to get back to that level of dominance. Overall on the season, Detmers, in 59.1 innings has struck out 67 with a 5.76ERA. Miller also has struggled vastly in the month of May in which he had a 5.22ERA and 23 strikeouts in 29.1 innings of work. Overall this season, the right-hander has a 3.48ERA and 62 strikeouts in 64.2 innings of work. He is coming off a solid start against the Houston Astros in which he gave up 2 earned runs and 6 strikeouts in had 8 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Angels are going to need a bounce back start out of Detmers this time out.

Game 3

In the series finale against the Mariners you’ll have right-hander Griffin Canning taking the bump as he’ll face off against Mariner ace Luis Castillo. Canning may have a 5.08 total ERA on the year, but he had an incredible month of May as he had a 2.60ERA with 20 strikeouts in 27.2 innings pitched. Canning has actually out performed Castillo as of late as the Mariner ace has a 3.03ERA with 26 strikeouts in 29.2 innings of work in May. Castillo, though, has been much more consistent on the season as he has had 8 quality starts on the year with a 3.28ERA with 75 strikeouts in 71.1 innings. Despite us facing the Mariners ace in this one, I truly think the Angels have a good chance as long as Canning pitches the way he did in May, if not, it’s going to be fairly difficult to beat Luis Castillo.

Our Predictions

This is a very important series for the Halos as they face a division rival. The Mariners lead the West and have a 9 game lead on the Angels, if the Halos want to close the gap, taking this series and winning at least 2 of the 3 games is extremely important. Match up wise, this series can really go either way. The starters overall with their recent performance is pretty evenly matched. The offense and bullpen is what you have to count on showing up these 3 games to ultimately give you the victory. Our predicition is pretty simple, if the Angels starters pitch like they should (aside from Detmers), the Angels have a real shot at winning this series. We’ll say a very close loss in Game 1 followed by back to back victories in Game 2 and 3. Detmers hasn’t been reliable at all recently, but got a feeling the left-hander is going to regain his confidence in this one. Feel free to leave us your prediction down below in the comments!
